Fu Er Dai

If your idea of a proper Penang breakfast involves bamboo baskets, king prawns, fluffy buns and enough food to make lunch completely unnecessary, put Fu Er Dai 富二代 on the list. This lively dim sum restaurant on Jalan Sultan Ahmad Shah serves a broad Cantonese-style spread, but the king-prawn siew mai and molten salted-egg lava buns are where I would start. Add har gow, chee cheong fun and a plate of Golden Emperor Mee, and suddenly “just breakfast” has become a full-blown yum cha session.

The location is another winner: easy enough to combine with a George Town heritage walk, and with parking available—a small miracle in this part of Penang. Come hungry, order for the table, drink plenty of tea and remember that one basket is never really one basket.

Restoran Nasi Kandar Line Clear

Hidden down a narrow passage off Jalan Penang, Nasi Kandar Line Clear is the kind of Penang institution that doesn’t need fancy décor, clever branding or a carefully staged dining room. Gou Lou Hong Kee Chao Sar Hor Fun & Noodles

If you like your Penang noodles with serious wok hei and absolutely no unnecessary nonsense, put Gou Lou Hong Kee on your George Town food map. Tucked along Campbell Street, this old-school Cantonese noodle specialist is all about charcoal-fired sar hor fun, dark and savoury Tai Lok Mee, oyster noodles, mee sua koh and gloriously fragrant belacan fried chicken.

The star is the dry sar hor fun: slippery rice noodles kissed by the heat of the wok and carrying that unmistakable smoky charcoal character. Add a plate of Tai Lok Mee, something crispy on the side and a little house chilli, and you’ve got the sort of George Town lunch that doesn’t need an Instagram filter—or a fancy dining room—to make its point.
