Hidden down a narrow passage off Jalan Penang, Nasi Kandar Line Clear is the kind of Penang institution that doesn’t need fancy décor, clever branding or a carefully staged dining room. Give me a plate of steamed rice, fried chicken or squid, three gravies and a proper banjir, and I’ll happily forget about the air-conditioning.
Line Clear is messy, rich, spicy, humid, gloriously old-school and completely unapologetic. Come for the curry, stay for the theatre of George Town street food — and remember: in Penang, the gravy isn’t a topping. It’s the point.
