About Ong Jetty
Ong Jetty is one of the historic clan jetties that form a unique waterfront community in George Town. Located at Weld Quay, this jetty, like the others, consists of a long wooden pier with houses built on stilts over the water. It was established in the 19th century by immigrant Chinese laborers and traders, and the Ong Jetty was traditionally home to families belonging to the Ong clan. While it may be less commercialized and more residential than the neighboring Chew Jetty, it offers a more authentic and less crowded glimpse into the traditional lifestyle of these waterfront communities. A walk along the Ong Jetty is a journey into a living heritage, where the pace of life seems slower and the connection to the sea is ever-present.
