About Meromictic Lake Tasik Meromiktik
The Meromictic Lake at the Penang National Park is a rare and fascinating natural phenomenon, making it one of the park's most unique attractions. A meromictic lake is one in which the layers of water do not mix. In this case, a layer of fresh, cool rainwater sits permanently on top of a layer of warmer, denser seawater that seeps in from the nearby sea, with the two layers being separated by a distinct boundary. This creates two different aquatic environments within the same lake, each supporting different types of organisms.
The lake is located at Kerachut Beach (Pantai Kerachut), which is accessible via a challenging jungle hike or by boat. The presence of this rare type of lake adds to the rich biodiversity and the ecological significance of the Penang National Park.
