About Lebuh Acheh
Lebuh Acheh, or Acheen Street, is one of the most historically rich streets within the George Town UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is named after the Acehnese community that settled here in the late 18th century and is anchored by the magnificent Acheen Street Mosque, which was built in 1808 and features a unique blend of Moorish and Chinese architectural styles. The street and its surrounding area were once the hub of the Muslim community in George Town, particularly for spice traders and pilgrims on their way to Mecca. Today, Lebuh Acheh is a vibrant street lined with beautifully preserved shophouses, traditional businesses, and trendy cafes. It is a key part of the heritage trail, offering a deep insight into the Islamic and Arab influences that have helped shape the multicultural identity of Penang.
