About Kandar-Sculpture

The "Kandar-Sculpture," located on Lebuh Ah Quee, is a steel-rod artwork from the "Marking George Town" series that pays homage to one of Penang's most famous culinary exports: Nasi Kandar. The sculpture depicts a traditional "Nasi Kandar" vendor, who would carry his food in two large containers balanced on a long pole (the "kandar") slung over his shoulder, selling rice and a variety of delicious curries on the streets.

This artwork celebrates the humble origins of this beloved dish, which was started by Indian Muslim immigrants. The sculpture is a nostalgic and charming tribute to the city's rich multicultural food heritage and the enterprising hawkers who helped create it. It serves as a fun, historical marker in the heart of the city that is now famous for its many Nasi Kandar restaurants.
