About Clan Jetties of Penang
The Clan Jetties of Penang, located at Weld Quay, are a unique and historic waterfront settlement that is a key part of the George Town UNESCO World Heritage Site. These are whole villages built on stilts over the water, established by Chinese immigrants in the 19th century. Each jetty was traditionally dominated by a specific Chinese clan, such as the Chew, Lim, Tan, and Lee clans. The wooden houses are connected by planked walkways, and the community has maintained a traditional way of life that is closely tied to the sea. The Chew Jetty is the most famous and tourist-friendly, with souvenir shops and food stalls, but exploring the other, quieter jetties offers a more authentic glimpse into this fascinating living heritage.
