About Chew Jetty
The Chew Jetty is the most famous, largest, and most tourist-oriented of the historic clan jetties at Weld Quay in George Town. Established in the mid-19th century, it is a whole village on stilts, traditionally inhabited by members of the Chew clan who were immigrants from the Fujian province of China. A walk along its main wooden pier takes you past rows of rustic wooden houses, a community temple, and a variety of small shops selling souvenirs, drinks, and local snacks. Despite its popularity with tourists, it remains a living community where residents go about their daily lives. The Chew Jetty offers a fascinating and immersive experience of one of Penang's most unique and iconic living heritage sites.
