About Bel Retiro
Bel Retiro is the most exclusive and historically significant heritage building on Penang Hill. Built in 1789 by the Governor of Penang, it is a magnificent government-owned mansion that has traditionally served as a resort residence for the highest-ranking government officials, including the Governor-General of Malaysia and the nation's King. The name "Bel Retiro" means "beautiful retreat" in Portuguese, a fitting description for this elegant colonial bungalow with its sprawling lawns and stunning views.
Due to its status as a private government retreat, Bel Retiro is not open to the public, and its grounds are strictly off-limits. However, visitors can catch a glimpse of this beautiful and historic building from the outside as they explore the summit of Penang Hill. It stands as a powerful symbol of the hill's colonial history and its long-standing prestige as a premier hill station.
