About Ah Quee -Sculpture

The "Ah Quee -Sculpture," located on Lebuh Ah Quee (Ah Quee Street), is a steel-rod sculpture from the "Marking George Town" series that pays tribute to one of the most powerful and influential figures in 19th-century Penang, Kapitan Chung Keng Quee. He was a prominent leader of the Hai San secret society and a wealthy tin mining magnate, often referred to by his nickname "Ah Quee."

The sculpture wittily depicts him and provides a short narrative about his significant influence and his connection to the street that now bears his name. This artwork is a great example of how the street art project brings the complex and fascinating history of Penang's powerful community leaders, or "Kapitan," to life for the public in an engaging and accessible manner.
