The FOUNDERS Hutton: George Town’s Stylish Bagel House With More Than Just Bagels
The FOUNDERS Hutton isn’t just another café in George Town.
It’s the kind of place that earns a return visit.
Located at 17, Jalan Hutton, this spacious contemporary café has become a destination in its own right. Come in for breakfast and a bagel. Stay for lunch. Settle upstairs with your laptop. Order dinner. Before you know it, Penang’s harsh morning light has softened into evening gold—and you’re still there.
The bagels may be the headline act, but they are only the beginning.
Calling The FOUNDERS Hutton a bagel café undersells what it has built. This is a full-day dining destination designed for modern Penang life: coffee in the morning, a proper meal at lunch, dessert in the afternoon and dinner without needing to move elsewhere.
That kind of flexibility is rare.
George Town is crowded with cafés competing for your brunch plans. The FOUNDERS Hutton stands out by offering more than a photogenic room and a fashionable menu.
It delivers atmosphere, variety and the kind of staying power that turns a first visit into a habit.
The Scene: Jalan Hutton With a Little More Polish
Jalan Hutton is one of those George Town streets where the city seems to change personality every few metres.
Heritage buildings sit alongside modern businesses. Tourists drift through with cameras. Locals weave around them on motorbikes. Cars squeeze into whatever parking space has mysteriously become available for exactly twelve seconds.
Then you reach The FOUNDERS Hutton.
The setting is noticeably different from the typical narrow George Town café.
The restaurant occupies a spacious property with a generous courtyard and plenty of natural light. Inside, the aesthetic leans rustic-modern rather than polished-luxury: textured walls, contemporary furniture, timber, warm neutrals and enough open space that you don’t feel as though you’re eating with your neighbour’s elbow in your ribs.
There is also an upper floor, which makes a difference.
A lot of cafés advertise themselves as “work-friendly” and then give you one tiny communal table beside a speaker.
The FOUNDERS Hutton has more room to breathe.
That makes it useful for groups, casual meetings, laptop sessions and the classic Penang café ritual of ordering one drink and somehow occupying a table for two hours.
The atmosphere can become lively, particularly when the café fills up. This isn’t a silent library disguised as a restaurant. Conversation is part of the soundtrack.
And if you’re sensitive to aggressive air-conditioning, bring a light layer.
Penang outside: tropical furnace.
The FOUNDERS inside: possibly cardigan weather.
Such is Malaysian café life.
What Should You Order?
1. The Sweet & Salty Bagel
Start here.
If you’re visiting The FOUNDERS Hutton specifically because you’ve heard about its bagels, this is one of the more interesting places to begin.
The café has built a reputation around its bagel selection, and the Sweet & Salty Bagel has emerged as one of the items people particularly talk about.
What makes a good bagel isn’t simply the filling.
It needs that balance between exterior chew and a properly substantial interior. Too soft and it becomes a bread roll wearing a bagel costume. Too hard and you’re essentially eating a doughnut-shaped doorstop.
The FOUNDERS version leans into that satisfying chew.
The pleasure comes from the contrast: savoury richness against sweetness, dense bread against softer fillings, with enough texture to make every bite feel deliberate.
It’s not the sort of breakfast that disappears unnoticed.
You chew.
You pause.
You take another bite.
And suddenly you’ve eaten half the thing.
2. Aussie Beef Bagel
For something considerably more substantial, go for the Aussie beef bagel.
The café’s menu features an Aussie beef patty bagel served with fries, and this is the sort of order that makes sense when “just coffee and something light” has somehow become lunch.
The beef brings the heavier, savoury side of the menu, while the bagel gives the whole thing more chew and structure than a conventional burger bun.
One of the pleasures here is that the café doesn’t appear to be treating the bagel as a novelty.
It’s being used as the central architecture of a meal.
And when you’re hungry, that matters.
A bagel sandwich should not collapse into your lap after the first bite.
It should have some backbone.
This one does.
3. Margherita Pizza
Now for the plot twist.
The pizza… and the Margherita are one of the dishes worth ordering, and the broader menu also includes vegetarian options such as the ratatouille pizza.
The Margherita is particularly useful because it tells you whether a café that specialises in brunch can actually handle dinner.
A mediocre pizza can be hidden beneath toppings.
A Margherita can’t.
You need the tomato, cheese and dough to pull their weight.
The FOUNDERS Hutton’s pizza offering gives the kitchen a chance to show that the restaurant isn’t merely a breakfast-and-coffee operation that closes mentally at 3pm.
And that matters because the café remains open until 11pm every day.
That late opening changes the experience.
You can come here in the morning.
You can come here after sightseeing.
You can come here for dinner.
You can come here when someone in your group wants brunch food and someone else insists they want a proper meal.
That flexibility is one of the restaurant’s strongest cards.
Don’t Ignore the Desserts
If the savoury menu is the reason you arrive, dessert may be the reason you return.
The tiramisu has been receiving plenty of attention, and current diner feedback repeatedly identifies it as one of the stronger sweet options.
There is also a Biscoff cinnamon roll and pavlova among the items that have developed a following.
The Biscoff cinnamon roll is exactly the sort of café dessert that requires some self-control.
Or no self-control whatsoever.
Penang has no shortage of cakes and pastries designed to look fantastic in photographs. What matters is whether you actually want another bite after the photograph.
The FOUNDERS seems to understand the difference.
The pastry and dessert selection gives the place another identity beyond its savoury menu.
You can drop in specifically for something sweet and a drink.
That makes the café useful even when you aren’t hungry enough for a full meal.
Coffee, Hojicha and the Drinks Situation
Coffee is an important part of the experience, but this isn’t a place where the drink menu exists merely to provide something brown beside your brunch.
There is a broad café-style drinks selection, including specialty coffee and non-coffee options.
The hojicha latte has been noted for its fragrant, roasted character, while drinks such as the crème brûlée coffee bring the café into more indulgent territory.
The hojicha is particularly appealing if you’re already suffering from Penang’s eternal coffee problem:
“Another iced latte?”
“Yes.”
“Do you need another iced latte?”
“No.”
“Are you ordering one?”
“…yes.”
A roasted tea gives you an escape route.
And sometimes you need one.
The Good
The space
This is probably the biggest strength.
The FOUNDERS Hutton feels considerably more spacious than many cafés in central George Town.
The courtyard, large dining areas and upper floor give different kinds of diners somewhere to settle.
You can be social.
You can work.
You can bring a family.
You can meet friends.
You can eat alone without feeling like you’ve been sentenced to the smallest table in the building.
That’s valuable.
The all-day menu
Breakfast at 9am.
Dinner at 8pm.
The same address.
No need to reorganise your day around the kitchen.
The bagels
They are the obvious speciality and for good reason.
There is enough variety that a return visit doesn’t feel like repeating the same meal.
The atmosphere
Stylish without being precious.
That is harder to achieve than it sounds.
The FOUNDERS Hutton has the visual language of a modern café without becoming so design-conscious that you feel afraid to put your elbows on the table.
The Not-So-Good
Now for the part where we stop pretending every café is perfect.
The FOUNDERS Hutton can get busy.
When a place has this much space and this much buzz, busy periods can still produce pressure on the kitchen and service.
Some diners have also reported slower service during busy periods. One detailed account described difficulty getting tables cleared and less-than-ideal communication around a customised order.
That doesn’t make the restaurant a write-off.
It does mean you should adjust your expectations.
If you’re visiting at peak brunch time with six hungry people and expecting food to appear instantly, Penang may have a different lesson planned for you.
Relax.
Order another drink.
Talk to your friends.
You’re in George Town, not an airport departure lounge.
And… the indoor air-conditioning can get quite chilly, and the dining room grows loud when the place fills up.
For some people, that’s ambience.
For others, it’s noise.
Know which camp you’re in.
Who Is The FOUNDERS Hutton For?
Couples
Very suitable.
There’s enough atmosphere to make it feel like a proper outing rather than simply grabbing breakfast.
Families
Also a good fit.
The broad menu means everyone doesn’t have to agree on the same cuisine.
Solo travellers
Absolutely.
Especially if you want somewhere to sit with a laptop, read, plan your Penang itinerary or simply hide from the afternoon heat.
Digital nomads
One of the more obvious audiences.
The upstairs area and spacious layout make it considerably more practical than tiny café counters.
Serious Penang hawker hunters
Here’s where I’d temper expectations.
Don’t come here expecting char kway teow, assam laksa or a plate of smoky Hokkien mee.
This is a different side of Penang.
The FOUNDERS Hutton is for when you want a modern café meal in the middle of George Town.
And sometimes, after three days of hawker food, that’s exactly what you want.
The Parking Problem
Ah yes.
Parking.
Penang’s unofficial national sport.
Street parking around Jalan Hutton can be difficult, particularly when the area is busy, but a paid multi-storey car park sits almost directly opposite.
My advice?
Don’t circle the block for twenty minutes hoping that a perfect parking space will materialise directly outside.
It won’t. For convenience’ sake, just use the paid multi-storey car park — if it isn’t full.
If you’re driving, factor parking into the journey.
If you’re staying in central George Town, walking or taking a Grab can be considerably less stressful.
And if you’re already exploring the heritage core, walking here is part of the experience.
You get to arrive hungry.
Which is exactly what you want.
Pro Tips
Go earlier if you want a calmer breakfast / lunch / dinner.
Ideally breakfast at 9am, lunch before 12pm, and dinner before 6pm.
Bring a light layer.
The air-conditioning can be chilly indoors.
Don’t assume “bagel café” means bagels only.
The menu stretches into pizzas, pasta, chicken dishes, desserts and drinks.
If you’re working, consider the upper floor.
It’s one of the more practical aspects of the space.
If you’re visiting with a group, give yourself time.
Peak periods can get busy.
Save room for dessert.
Particularly if tiramisu is your weakness.
If you’re driving, have a parking plan before you arrive.
Because Penang parking karma is not something to leave to chance.

The Verdict
The FOUNDERS Hutton isn’t trying to be the next hidden Penang secret.
And honestly?
Good.
I’m increasingly suspicious of cafés that insist they’re “hidden gems” when there are 300 people photographing the same cappuccino outside.
The FOUNDERS Hutton is much more straightforward.
It is a polished, spacious, contemporary café in central George Town that wants to feed you from morning until night.
The bagels are the obvious entry point.
The Sweet & Salty Bagel is the sort of order I’d recommend for a first visit, while the Aussie beef bagel makes more sense when hunger has arrived with a passport and no intention of leaving early.
The pizza broadens the appeal, the desserts give you a reason to linger, and the drinks menu keeps the café functioning as a proper all-day hangout rather than a breakfast-only destination.
There are compromises.
It can get busy.
Service may slow down during peak periods.
The room can become noisy.
And the air-conditioning occasionally appears to have declared war on tropical temperatures.
But none of those problems change the bigger picture.
The FOUNDERS Hutton has something many cafés don’t quite manage: range without losing its identity.
You can have a bagel at 9am.
Pizza at 7pm.
Tiramisu somewhere in between.
You can work upstairs, meet friends in the courtyard, bring the family, or simply sit down after walking around George Town until your legs start filing formal complaints.
And that, more than the Instagram-friendly interiors or the fashionable menu, is why I think The FOUNDERS Hutton works.
It isn’t necessarily the place I’d send someone who has only 24 hours in Penang and wants the most traditional local food possible.
But if you’ve already eaten your way through hawker stalls, want a break from plastic stools and want somewhere modern without leaving George Town’s historic heart?
This is a very easy recommendation.
One-and-done?
Probably not.
Weekly staple?
For anyone living around central George Town, I can see the argument.
Especially if you’ve got a weakness for good bagels.
And tiramisu.
Mostly the tiramisu.
